Invitation to Workshop "Sustainable City" for architecture students and young architects, June 15 to 17, 2023 in Pärnu

The Estonian Association of Architects in co-operation with Clever Cities Group is organising a workshop „Sustainable City“ for architecture students and young architects, June 15 to 17, 2023 in Pärnu.

The terms of reference for the workshop are the planning and development of the vision of the new district of Pärnu City, which will cover 12 hectares and a population of ca 1,600. The terms of reference for the establishment of the city district cover all of the fundamental principles of contemporary urban planning, such as the densification of urban space, inclusive design and accessibility. The most important terms of reference are climate neutrality and green policy principles - the use of rainwater, biodiversity, local materials, etc. The entire district will be made of timber and produced in a plant to reduce the carbon footprint of construction. In addition to small businesses, flats and a kindergarten, the new district will also have academic buildings for IT studies and dormitories for 300 students. Urban planning on such a scale is not often carried out in Estonia and it’s an ideal opportunity for young architects to acquire urban planning experience from top experts in this field.
The input information gathered from the urban planning workshop for young people will be the basis for the terms of reference of a public architecture competition.

The end result of the workshop must be a professionally prepared PowerPoint presentation and a one pager in A1 landscape format.

Students of architecture and urban planning and young architects (who have recently graduated) from Estonia, Latvia and Finland, as well as Ukrainian students studying in Estonia are welcome to join the workshop. There will be seven teams with four members (28 participants), and each team will have members from different schools/countries.

The mentors are from three countries - Indrek Allmann (Estonia), the representatives of Finland and Latvia are pending approval.

The participants can examine the planned area and the general concept on 14 June, and new urban construction solutions will be generated over the following three days, from 15 to 17 June.

A prize of 1200 euros will be awarded to the best group work (team, 4 members). There is a participation bonus of 100 euros for all the other participants. Bus transport to and from Pärnu, accommodation(4 nights) with breakfast and lunch is also covered.

The working language of the workshop is English.
